The above figures present a visual portrait of novelty as portrayed by recurrence plots. The time series of
heartbeat intervals has few recurrences, that are clustered in complexes separated by interruptions. Shuffling
the data generates a time with the same statistical distribution but with a random temporal pattern. The number
of recurrences is markedly increased. and they are uniformly distributed over the entire plot.
